One of the biggest differences between the full version of Photoshop and its stripped down sibling, Elements, is that that latter has no Layer Mask function. This can make blending different images a problem because you either have to use the Eraser tool, or create a Selection before deleting the pixels. Either way its not ideal because once the pixels have been removed, it’s not easy to get them back.
With Layer Masks though you can paint the pixels in or out of view as you wish using the Brush tool. This makes it a highly effective and flexible option that’s favoured by photographers wanting to make montages or introduce new elements into an existing scene via the Layers palette.
Though there’s no direct route to adding a Layer Mask in Elements, in this lesson you’ll find out how to get the same effect by clipping an Adjustment Layer to a regular Layer. Confused? You won’t be after watching this video lesson…
