Le Mans 24 Hour Race 2010

In the early summer of 2010 Practical Photography was invited to join Chevrolet at Le Mans, in France, as they celebrated the 50th anniversary of their racing team participating in the event.

Never missing a chance to photograph something a little out of the normal, PP Technique Writer, James Abbott, and Photo answers Web Producer Ben Webb accepted the invite and made the journey down to the hallowed track at Le Mans.

well ben if your paying i'll come next time no moaning assured lol

i know what you mean james as i have just the one camera and have to swap lenses pritty quick sometimes but i always slam the 15-45 in before i go near the garage pit area just incase

odstock whats the walter hayes one like not done that yet

a good free day is the renault series type it in on your search bar registar for news letter and in a few weeks time you will get one asking you how many tickets you want ( max 4) and vwalar there you have four tickets to the full weekend of motor sport

intresting video to watch and a real shame i couldnt hear you for most of it but i do know how noisey the le mans series is, i have yet to get to le mans in france but have done bothe the gt series and lemans 1000 this year at silverstone i have a cracking image of the 63 corvette all burnt out from when it exploded at silverstone this year, I can fully understand your comment of getting bored now as it sometimes does, i agrea though that some of what you were saying did come accross as moaning but if that was your first moter race event i can understand it, and ide have loved the oppertunity to get inside the barriers to get some images without the obscurity of the trackside fencing ( a real pain in the but ) but using a pro lens you should have had no issues at all, i am badgering my better half to get me a 300 for my olympus but no movement as yet, maybee something in the christmas socking for me, well if not i will just keep going on with the 150 for now, i found though that the best way to get the crispist shots was to pre focus on a point then pan back keeping the lock held in and wait for the car, pan with the car and shout on rapid fire, having a good shutter priority and low iso usually gave good results, like yourself given the oppertunity to go to le mans i would rip there hands off as well, pit walks and garage open times are a great way of getting some super pictures , i look forwards ro reading the suppliment on this subject

I only took one D3s, two would have been better but it wasn't really possible. As a back up I also had a D300s. I changed lenses a lot, which isn't ideal but fairly quick and easy to do. I decided on the lens I wanted to use based on subject distance and/or an effect I was hoping to achieve.

James it was a good insite into what it`s like to cover a motorsport event, I`ve never covered Le-Mans and would love to, I think :os

But did cover the Walter Hayes Trophy at SIlverstone last, month the last big track car motorsport of the year, and all I had in my head all day was the brief for the job. And the fact that I was on my own to get all the shots that they wanted.

It`s a tough job but what I thought at the time is that it`s better than shooting weddings, so get on with it.

On a question note. Did you take two D3`s? If not how did you make the desision on what lense to fit? On track okay 200-400, but the pits and paddock, hard work with one camera.
