Jon Adams, editor of Digital Photo magazine, reveals how to ensure your pictures are presented to a professional quality standard by creating a virtual canvas the same size as your paper and mounting the image on it. Though Elements is used in this video, the technique employed is also fully compatible with Photoshop.

Here's a better way of doing this in Photoshop. After you've put your image into the blank layer document, convert your image to a smart object. Now apply a stroke non-destructively by clicking on the FX icon at the bottom of the layers palette (you can use the same settings as the tutorial). Save this file and call it print template.psd. Now here's the good bit - after you've made your print go to the Layer Menu > Smart Objects and choose replace contents. this allows you change the image whilst retaining the border effects. Using this method you can use this one document to make multiple prints. You can set up one template for portrait shots and one for landscape, you can also add your name beneath the image. I've spent hours before now, not to mention wasted loads of quality paper and ink trying to do this. I can't wait until my next print which will now take minutes! Thanks
