Converting to BW and Dodging and burning this way is effective but destructive to the original pixels. A great way to dodge and burn non-destructively is to create a new layer. Set the new layers blend mode to Overlay and paint on it with black to darken and white to lighten, keeping the opacity of the brush to around 4%. I you want to use the Dodge and Burn tools non-destructively you can do this in a similar way - create a new layer and set it's blend mode to overlay. But in order for the tools to work you need to fill the layer with 50% grey. Then dodge and burn on the grey layer. Hope this helps. Regards. Steve. http://www.photoshoptraining.org.uk
