Thanks for your comments but this is one where we'll have to agree to disagree. The point of this technique is that Vaseline remains easy to manipulate to get the distorted effects shown on the video. You are only using a tiny dab of it and, as I said, a soft absorbant cloth will remove it relatively easily - I've never had a problem with it. You can use a cheap skylight filter as I did - and can pick up a 77mm UV filter for just £4.99 online. Obviously you want to ensure you don't smear it anywhere else on yourself or your camera! Most of the other ways you have mentioned will NOT create the effect used here. They will create an effect but it's a different one - basically an all over soft focus of a lesser or greater degree. I can't comment on the use of finger nail polish or hairspray but would imagine both products are designed to dry fairly quickly and will therefore, not be able to be worked in the same way as Vaseline can. I might give them a try and report back

This is a great tip, that has made me smile. It reminded me of my time in Germany in 1996. On one of the cable channels they were showing how to make home movies of a hmmm erotic nature. One of the tips was to smear vaseline around the lens of camcorder to give it that dreamy look. It was quite affective with the intimate lighting. It reminded me of a 80's porn film. Not that I ever saw one of course I never thought I will be using the very same technique in more conservative way. Thanks PP,DP
