Leica has announced the M9, the ‘world’s smallest full-frame camera system’. A quick look at the M9’s spec sheet reveals a 24x36mm sensor, 18MP image sensor, a new ISO adjustment button and a newly developed glass sensor cover designed to suppress IR light. The M9 measures just 139x37x80mm and is available in standard black and, for the first time, a steel grey with classic leatherette finish. The M9 is yours for just £4850. Bargain.
Leica has also announced the X1, a 12.2MP compact with APS-C sensor designed for ‘uncomplicated’ photography. The X1 features an Elmarit 24mm f/2.8 lens, which offers ‘outstanding picture quality comparable with professional cameras’, as well as all-metal construction and leather trim. The X1 will be unleashed on an unsuspecting world in January 2010. Price is yet to be confirmed.
The M9 and X1 announcements coincide with the opening of Leica’s swanky new showroom in Mayfair, London. Located at 34 Bruton Place, between Old Bond Street and Berkerly Square, the showroom stocks the full Leica range and boasts a fully functional studio (designed to showcase Leica’s pro S-system) and training room.
