The Canon EOS 7D has been a highly anticipated camera, and we’ve just got our hands on one in the Photo answers office. Canon went back to the drawing board with this DSLR, so it’s a whole new beast that’s brimming with versatility, speed and detail. Despite being slightly more compact than older prosumer Canon models, the 7D still feels good in the hands and buttons seem easier to use. One thing we picked up on is that some controls that you may have accustomed to with other Canon DSLRs have to be set up manually with the 7D. It’s not a problem but it’s something to think about before you rush out to shoot.

The specification is impressive - just what you’d expect for the £1800 price tag. The frame rate of 8fps is perfect for action photography. Add to that an improved AF system with 19-point cross-type sensors, which can be set up as individual or groups of active points. It doesn’t stop there, you also get 100% viewfinder coverage and a new 63-zone dual layer metering system that provides more consistent and accurate metering. Make sure you read the December issue of Practical Photography (on sale 4th Nov) for a full review.
