With long padded legs the Velbon Sherpa CF-535 doesn’t look like a carbon fibre tripod when folded and that’s no bad thing! The look of the Velbon Sherpa PRO CF-535 suggests it’s not unduly expensive but unlock the tripod’s flip locks and the distinguishable carbon fibre patterned tubes are revealed, with useful measure marks on the length of each leg. These are handy for setting the legs to equal lengths on uneven ground, as there’s no spirit level here to check with.
With legs extended the Velbon reaches a height of 158cm. To use it at its lowest height (18cm) the column needs to be split and the leg spread locks lifted and broadened to their third widest setting. The central column is reversible but surprisingly this section isn’t made out of carbon fibre and, unlike others on test, cannot be re-arranged in the horizontal position. Out of the box the leg locks rather disappointingly slipped under strain, but this was soon put right with a few quick turns on each lock with the supplied allen key.
