The Vanguard Espod 203AP is a new tripod that can support a 2Kg load, and there’s a quick-release plate for a hassle-free setup .The Vanguard Espod 203AP has a folded height of 57cm and in maximum height terms, it’s extendable to 145cm. We managed to erect it to this height in a decent 25secs. It lacks a shortened centre column and leg spread releases though, so only goes as low as 53cm. At the bottom of the column there’s a hook for you to hang your bag to stabilise the tripod in windy conditions and this can be unscrewed when the centre column needs to be reversed.
Manufactured from aluminium alloy, the tripod felt durable in the hand and the same could be said for the 3-way pan head it comes with. Better for fine adjustments than rapid movements, the chunky handgrip controls vertical movement and beneath this the tightening ring firmly secured the centre column height. Alternative heads can be attached using the 3/8in thread size, provided you’ve got the right size Allen key to take the old one off. The spirit level was handy when working on uneven terrain and we found the leg locks secured each leg solidly.
