The Sony HVL-F42 is Sony’s mid-range model and is compatible with the Alpha range of D-SLRs with their unique mounting foot.

Weighing in at 340g the Sony HVL-F42 is quite a heavy flashgun and has a good build with a nice action to the head and easy-to-use buttons on the rear. The foot is plastic and there’s an unusual release button as opposed to the more standard tightening wheel.
Features include a 24-105mm zoom head, wireless TTL, AF-assist beam and wide-angle panel. There’s also a high speed sync mode, and manual control over both the flash and zoom settings using controls that are intuitive to use.
The HVL-F42 is at the more powerful end of models we tested with a listed Guide Number of GN42. In our test it hit GN32, but the recycle time was good at 5.3secs.
