The idea is simple: set the date and time on your camera, switch on the tracker and start shooting. Back at your computer, you can then use the software supplied to synchronise the picture’s capture time and GPS log to bring the two bits of data seamlessly together. The precise GPS location for your photographs is added to the meta data (EXIF version 2.1 required). From here you can view the images as pins on a map.
It sounds good but the reality is not so sweet. The GPS won't work very well indoors, under cover of trees or in very built-up areas and the accuracy and refresh is not great. Also, battery life is questionable, it’s a bit too big, and the supplied software isn't very good – it doesn’t even recognise RAWs.
We can’t help thinking, even if the system was perfect, who needs it? If geotagging is your thing then check out your other options first. Nikon’s P6000 compact camera has GPS built in. Also, Nikon’s GP1 hotshot GPS unit is out soon for their DSLRs. These both sound a lot more convenient.
