Available for Nikon, Canon and Sigma DSLRs the EM-140DG is a budget option ring flash for macro photography. The unit is comprised of two main components, the ring flash itself and a hotshoe mounted controller, connected by a coiled lead. In fact the ring flash is actually two bulbs which sit either side of the lens, rather than a true round strobe encircling the lens. A pair of AF assist lamps at the top and bootom of the unit complete the lighting array.
The controller offers a number of modes such as TTL and manual, as well as multi-burst mode and exposure compensation. There’s a range of adaptors included with the kit to allow the flash to fit to dffernt sized lenses, and it’s also compatible with wireless flash guns to add backlighting and so on.
Results from the Sigma EM-140DG are mixed, ith some corner fall off and a tendency to underexpose, but these can be compensated either in shooting (for the underexposure) and in post production for the fall off.
Verdict
As a cheaper option to the Canon and Nikon offerings, the Sigma ringflash does the job, if you’re prepared to accept some limitations.
