Sigma is mainly known as a lens maker, but it offers a range of flashguns, too, with the Sigma EF 530 DG Super available for Sigma, Canon, Nikon, Pentax and Sony systems.

The Sigma EF 530 DG Super is a big and heavy flashgun. It has a mottled plastic finish and the build is good with positive clicks to the bounce and swivel actions. However, it uses separate buttons to control the bounce and the swivel, which is annoying, and there’s a plastic foot, too.
Features include wireless TTL, an AF assist beam, wide-angle panel and high speed sync shooting. There’s also a modelling light - handy for judging shadows – and the large backlit LCD screen is easy for navigating settings.
The output is listed at GN53, making it quite powerful, although the max output we measured was GN39. Recycle times were clocked at a slow 7.5secs, but it does have more power.

For Canon users on a budget these guns will do just about everything that Canon's flagship gun will do but at about half the price - you can pick these up for about £165 in the UK. The build quality isn't up to a Canon and the userface is a little complicated to start with but like most things you get used to it after a while. The exposures are consistant and very nicely balanced. For anyone who is starting into using strobes both on and off camera I believe these offer much better value for money than any other that I have seen. Add to this that they now come in all sorts of 'flavours' (Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax and Sigma) these flashes certainly warrant some serious consideration at least.
