Replacing your standard zoom with something a little more versatile for £300 is certainly worthy of consideration, and positively recommended when you look at this new lens from Sigma, the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 HSM.

Not only does the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 HSM offer a great focal length range from 18-50mm, it also has a fast minimum aperture of f/2.8 at the 18mm end of the zoom. Add to that the built-in optical stabiliser and HSM fast focusing motor technology, and you have a very neat lens. Performance wise, the lens delivers crisp images across the zoom range and works well with the APS-C sensors for which it is designed. The lens is very neatly designed and weighs just 395g, which makes it a perfect partner for your DSLR.

This lens is an excellent upgrade to the kit lens. Very pleased with the images as they are much sharper than the kit lens and there is barely any distorion or abberations compared to the kit lens. The autofocus is quick and the zoom ring has a nice buttery feel. The lens comes with a petal shaped hood which is something most kit lenses are not provided with.
