If you’re not confident enough to use your DSLR’s LCD screen and histogram to assess exposures but want absolutely perfect exposures, then using a lightmeter is the best way to go about it. Lightmeters take two types of light readings – incident and reflected – but for most studio photography incident readings are the most reliable. This method measures the amount of light hitting the lightmeter’s sensor, producing more reliable exposure information than LCD screens and histograms. The Sekonic L-308s is the smallest and most basic digital lightmeter in the Sekonic range but can take flash sync, flash triggered, ambient and EV light readings – aka everything you need.
