The Quantum QF80 reflector replaces the standard reflector included with the Quantum Qflash system and allows you to add infrared and UV filters with a 67mm thread to any Quantum Qflash flashgun. The illumination bands can range from non-visible ultraviolet (350-400nm) to visible to non-visible infrared 700nm and above.
Shooting with an infrared filter on your flashgun opens up the strange new world of flash-lit infrared photography: veins become prominent, skin tones become soft and milky, and greens appear to glow. Though it’s principally designed for forensic photography and surveillance, the QF80 also has artistic applications. However, when used with infrared filters, exposures are limited because all light except infrared is blocked out. I found shooting with the Qflash close to the subject, with the lens set to its widest aperture yielded the best results.
The main problem with the QF80 is that it’s designed for a great, yet expensive flash system. This really is a specialist piece of kit, but if you already have a Quantum Qflash you can have a lot of fun with this accessory. It’s also great for nude photography thanks to the unique way it illuminates skin.
