Olympus’s flashgun range features three models with the Olympus FL-36R smack bang in the middle. The Olympus FL-36R is small and light but doesn’t look out of place on small bodies like the E-450. Build and design is mixed; there’s a good action to the head, but the sunken buttons are difficult to press positively, and having two release buttons, one each for the bounce & swivel movements, is rather frustrating.
There’s TTL and manual control of both flash output and the zoom head, a wide-angle panel and AF assist beam, but no fill-in reflector. More advanced features include wireless support and it can also be controlled via a camera’s LCD for more intuitive working.
The GN is listed as 36 although the maximum we recorded was GN22. The recycle speed clocked was quite slow in test at 11secs, but the FL-36R only takes 2xAA batteries, rather than four as seen elsewhere.
