The Nikon SB-800 is the top of the range offering from Nikon, featuring wireless operation, anti redeye pre flashes and an impressive power output.

The Nikon SB-800 is well built and feels very rugged when compared to other models. With a GN 38/53 (ISO 100/200, at 35mm) and capable of covering a zoom range of 14 to 105mm, it can handle any situation.

The back of the flashgun is well laid out, one button switches between modes, including Manual, Aperture, TTL and TTL BL which gives you that bit more power for backlit situations, but also works fantastically indoors in low light situations.

The multi-selector button controls flash distance and adjustments to power output, it’s when you press the button in the middle ‘SEL’ when the interesting stuff happens because this takes you into menu screens that control the wireless I-TTL. From one unit in Commander Mode you can control up to four other flashguns, meaning you can get rid of the leads and wires you trip over.

Power comes from four AA batteries and there is an option to add a fifth. The flash also features a metal mount, which makes it feel more rigid when fixed on the camera and is a good feature if you take your flash on and off a lot.

If you’re using Nikon D-SLRS and you want a flash that does everything, then do not hesitate in buying the SB800, you will not be disappointed.

With such inbuilt flexibility its hard to beat for Nikon and fuji SLR users .Without doubt the best of the bunch. The latest unit may outdo it but I would find it hard to explain why I would need to upgrade. Being slightly expensive drops it to 4*

I believe the SB-800 is a great buy - it gives you some useful extra power in comparison to the SB-600, and has a larger automatic zoom range. I love the Nikon CLS system and my default set-up is in commander mode with the flash fixed on its stand ready to go in my bag. What you get with the strobe are the stand, gel filter kit, extra battery holder and omni bouncer. The gel filters are the FL-G1 for taking flash pictures under fluorescent light and the TN-A1 for use with incandescent/tungsten light. I have had some great results with the flash unit on the hot-shoe in iTTL-BL mode, and also with the Auto-FP High Speed Synch. I would highly recommend it to anyone with a nikon digital SLR. I wish i could afford another! 10/10 or alernatively 5*

The 'bees knees' IF you need a flash gun for your Nikon system, the first or only should be the SB800, the SB600 is fine for second or subsequent ones but always go for the big daddy first, it is just so much better.
