The Nikon SB-600 is a medium-priced model but with a definite professional feel to it. The sturdy unit boasts one button controlling tilt and swivel and a metal mount, just like its bigger brother, the SB-800.

On the back of the unit there is an LCD panel that tells you what’s going on and six buttons to control all settings, including flash mode, zoom options and power output. The buttons, being backlit, are an added bonus at night, as at least you can see what you are doing with your flash.

The SB-600 is part of Nikon’s wireless lighting system. It can be controlled by an SB-800 set to commander mode or some of the Nikon range of D-SLRs, including the D200.

The flashgun has a reasonable power output with a GN of 30, and can cover a zoom range from 14 to 85mm. It is powered by 4x AA batteries and recycling time from full power is approx 3.5 seconds

It’s an excellent flashgun as a main unit for amateurs or a back up, wireless unit for more experienced users.

This is a very good unit on the whole and it would have got top mark through out, had mine not have broken a small but annoying break the rubber cover which holds the swivel button in came unstuck on mine while using this unit as a main flash in a wedding. While this didn't stop the unit working it did make it awkward to use and i had to reglue it myself. Assides that small problem the unit has been very good and very useful but it must be said that I feel it not a good thing that it broke after having very little use. I would guess about 1500 flashes over the course of a year (was just out of Warrenty when it broke) This is all in all a bright flash with very good night illumination and very good features all of which I have found to be useful at one time or another, I would suggest using a Stofen flash diffuser with the SB-600 as this makes for much nicer Portraits and images in general. I have two sets of AA rechargable batteries 2600mha and they are good for an entire days shooting, estimate 300+ images. I use this flash with my nikon D70 off camera useing the D70s flash as a slave, this is I think the most useful and creative feature of this unit it means if I am out in the field I can simply take the flash off camera and change the lighting for some dramatic and/or unusual effects.

SB-800 Rubber Cover

Good flash, but I had the same problem with the rubber cover on the swivel button falling of.
