The Metz 58 AF-1 is an excellent independent flash that not only gives you a bounce and auto zoom head, it also fires out a powerful GN58 covering lenses up to 105mm. All this for £250 makes the 58 AF-1 really good value.

The Metz 58 AF-1 feels really well made, and despite its data LCD lacking the detail of its branded adversaries, it’s still perfectly adequate. On the front of the flash is a second flash tube that can provide fill-in light when bouncing the main light. This is especially useful for portrait work, as it helps deliver a catchlight in the subject’s eyes. You can use the 58 AF-1 as a wireless remote flashgun on the Canon E-TTL and Nikon I-TTL remote systems. It also has an integrated slave trigger so it can be used in manual off-camera situations too.
Recycling is nice and quick, and the flash is effectively ‘plug and play’ on your DSLR. The accuracy of the light delivery is very good, and the flash provides a balanced output. Powered by four AA batteries, the 58 AF-1 is a great all-round addition to any camera bag, and is certainly recommended for the price.
