The Metz 54 AF-1 is a very powerful flashgun in a compact, lightweight design that produces near perfect results.

The Metz 54 AF-1 looks very basic – there are only three buttons on the back and getting to the controls involves a number of button combinations, but you will need to read the manual to get it right.
You can’t swivel the head and there’s no wide-angle adaptor but what it lacks in specification it makes up for in performance. Powered by 4xAA batteries it has a massive GN of 54 and a zoom coverage of 24 to 105mm.
The unit is available for Cannon E-TTL, it can also be used on the Powershot series, and Nikon i-TTL and D-TTL modes.
When compared to other flashguns in the same price range it beats them hands down in terms of results, with better light coverage at the corners of the frame. It is a great choice if you want a simple but very powerful flashgun.

I bought this still under new warranty at half the new price which is a great start! I'm amazed how easy it is to use. Not having used a dedicated flashgun since my trusty T20 on Olympus OM2 25 years ago I'm moderately gobsmacked at the features. I hadn't realised how far the electronics had progressed. Results are excellent and I'm particularly impressed at the bounce flash. All I'm missing and would have liked is the potential to swivel the head sideways and, perhaps, the addition of a small forward facing flash to use whilst the main head is on bounce. I must see if I can combine its use with my built in flash!
