From China-based Massa comes a range of screw-on ND filters, commonly available from online auction sites for between £4 and £7 plus postage. Sizes range from 22-86mm and there are ND densities from 2-8. Build-quality is variable and the threads can sometimes be less than smooth, but in use the filters perform well.
Colour casts are minimal and quality is reasonable, allowing you to experiment with longer exposures for light trails and ethereal-looking landscapes, for example, without costing the earth. In the long-term, you’ll likely find the flexibility of a pro-style holder system is desirable, but as a stopgap solution the Massa brand offers a cheap and cheerful alternative.
