Manfrotto’s 190CXPRO3 is a lightweight, top-notch tripod weighing just 1.29Kg. The leg sections on the Manfrotto 190CX PRO3 are pulled out effortlessly and clamped into place using the flip-lock style of leg lock. Fully erect it reached 146cm in rapid time – 17 seconds. The maximum height is the shortest out of the six but remains more than adequate for most shooting situations. Excelling itself at low working heights – as low as 8cm – it’s all made possible with wide spreading legs and an ingenious central column arrangement. Depress the central column base button as it’s raised and it’ll swing by 90 degrees into a horizontal position, all done in a hasty 4 seconds. On the top-plate there’s a levelling bubble and underneath the top-plate are three grub screws to tighten a head onto the tripod to make it more secure. The £194 price doesn’t make it cheap if you don’t already have a Manfrotto 1/4’’ threaded head to pop on top so be prepared to fork out some extra cash (£50-70) for one of your choice.
The lightweight materials are solid without sacrificing strength and the 1.29kg weight is barely noticeable when loaded as part of your backpack. Not only is it extremely light, the ingeniously designed centre column arrangement that Manfrotto calls its ‘Quick Column System’ offers all the shooting angles you could ever wish for. If a light tripod is just what you need, the 190CXPRO3 is the way to go, offering all the rigidity, strength and practicality you could need at a sensible price. Choose a 1/4in pro head (budget £50-£70 for this) and you’ll have a top notch tripod that’ll last for many years.
