The standard way to achieve a white background, free of shadows, is to use white background paper, often lit with a pair of studio lights set at 2 stops over the foreground exposure. This solution works well, but requires space, lights and large paper rolls. Lastolite has come up with a pop-up backround that is more portable and fits into smaller spaces. Available in a choice of four sizes, the HiLite is a box type background with a white opaque fabric. A studio head is placed through an opening in the side panel to provide a glowing lit background similar in principle to a giant lightbox. It could also be used a large softbox casting a very large pool of soft light.
The device works well, but is cumbersome to erect and take down – the double panel Lastolite pop up requires two people to handle. It’s a little unwieldy but once up works well in producing a very clean white background with no shadows from the foreground model.
