If you don’t want to lug a heavy, bulky backpack around the city or on a shoot, a better and more feasible option is a well-designed shoulder bag. Slung over the shoulder they offer much quicker access to your kit and will mean you’ll have your camera to hand at a moment’s notice so you don’t miss a photo opportunity.
KATA’s latest Photo Reporter shoulder bags are designed for photographers who require strength and durability as well as instant access to their gear. The high-quality materials used to create the PR-460 are similar to those used on the R-101 and HB-207 backpacks, giving it the reassuring feel that it’ll survive the rough and tumble of everyday use.
Unlike many shoulder bags that use a number of complex zippers and fastex buckles to keep the main flap closed, the PR-460 is designed using one fastex buckle and Velcro. This allows access to the bag in just under three seconds via the main flap or, if you want speedier entry, just pull back the press top watertight zipper and you can get your hands on kit in a second. The two bulbous outside pockets are super sized, and swallowed up our camera and laptop chargers, offering extra room in the main interior compartment for lenses or other accessories.
The interior is yellow for a good reason – searching for accessories in a dark bag on an overcast day isn’t easy but this brightly coloured interior makes it a breeze to find what you want when you need it. There’s also a removable insert on the inside that helps strengthen the bag’s rigidity and the soft padded inserts use the same strength Velcro found elsewhere on the bag. These can be arranged accordingly to accommodate your gear and, after some sensible packing, we managed to fit six lenses and our D-SLR in with room to spare for a flashgun. There’s even a neat space for a 15in laptop and a number of your favourite magazines behind the removable insert.
Two more pockets found at the front of the bag proved to be suitable spaces for filters and general accessories. We used one for our filter kit and adapter rings and the other to hold the elements cover. If you’re in a remote location and it rains, the elements cover can be thrown over the bag to protect your expensive kit it from the worst conditions and fastened tightly using the two drawstrings.
The Photo Reporter 460 is a titanic sized shoulder bag with an excellent capacity for kit. Despite the size it’s still comfortable to carry around, partly due to its dimpled rubberized shoulder strap. If you don’t have the same amount of kit we did to fill the PR 460, try the smaller Photo Reporter shoulder bags instead, such as the PR 420 or the PR 440.
