The Kata E-690 Elements cover is aimed at zoom lens cameras and D-SLRs. Made from high quality materials throughout, the large transparent material on the back allows you view the controls on the rear of your camera and - just as important – lets you review the images on your camera’s screen. The two hand sleeves give instant access and can be tightened to create a weatherproof seal.

One of the main advantages of the Kata E-690 is its lightweight feel. Weighing a mere 0.11kg means you can pack it into your camera bag and hardly notice it’s there. We tested the cover with a Nikon D80 fitted with a Sigma 18-50mm lens and had no trouble accommodating this combination inside. The two side hand sleeves were fully adjustable with pull-tight toggle straps and if you’re shooting in portrait mode you can use just one sleeve if you wish. This cover proved its worth in rainy conditions and kept our D-SLR clean and dry inside, but you need a lens cloth to wipe off the raindrops that pass the lens hood. Partly unzipping the cover underneath means you could mount the camera onto a tripod, handy if you happen to be out shooting with one.

The Kata E-690 gave superb protection from wet weather, but we struggled to fit in larger sized D-SLRs like the Nikon D300 or Canon 5D.  If you have one of these D-SLRs, we recommend you take a look at the bigger E-702 or E-704 covers from the Kata range.

As a wildlife photographer, my work takes me to all kinds of environments and conditions including salt spray, rain, sand and snow. I have in the past resorted to plastic bags, elastic bands and tape to protect my equipment, but it is a hassle and often very time consuming and can lead to missing a shot. The elements cover and lens extension covers from Kata are quick and easy to use and protect my cameras from even the harshest of conditions. The current contract I am working on involves taking photographs and video of both the wildlife on and around the islands of the Inner Hebrides and commercial material of the RIBs for potential clients from both open and enclosed RIBs and dinghies. Weather conditions can change quickly during a shooting session from sunshine and flat seas to big swells and spray so I need to know that my cameras will be protected from both rain and saltwater spray. These covers have been invaluable over the last few months providing me with the piece of mind that my equipment is protected and allowing me to concentrate on the shots I need to get. I will update this review further once I have tested the covers in winter conditions in Romania. The E-702 cover is quick and simple to put on and has two hand sleeves with toggle straps to form a tight fitting weather seal whilst making all the camera buttons and dials just as accessible as they would be without the covers and the screen is still easily visible. A canon 7D and small lens fit comfortably inside the cover, the E-704 extension kit is perfect for longer lenses with the thick Velcro bands ensure that a tight seal is achieved. The material is both durable and tough withstanding even the harshest of conditions and environments whilst still being lightweight and easy to store and carry. I would definitely recommend the E-702 and lens extension kit E-704 to any photographer that works in the outdoor environment and requires good reliable protection for their equipment. Winter Update…… With all the recent snowfall in the UK, I have been out and about testing the elements covers in pretty deep snow, resting my camera on snow covered branches and even laying in the snow! I can report that the only thing that got wet was in fact me; my camera and lens were completely dry even when lying in the snow. I now look forward to taking these covers out to the Carpathian Mountains in the coming months and seeing how they fair in the environments out there.

Just use one hand although you may be restricted as to what you can do as some cameras have setting buttons spread all over the place. seems a good idea but with most cameras now being 'waterproof' to the extent of light showers and what not its proberly not worth the time or money. I have a nikon F80 and have used that in many torrential downpours and its come back home fine, just need to wipe it down so not to get watermarks on the lens ect...( you can proberly buy a cheap lens instead tbh) regards Sam

RE: Kata E-690 Elements Cover

I went to Weston Super Mare beach race and to protect my lense from sand and rain; I bought the EWA Marine Cape, it was perfect and met what FLASH! asked. It was about £50 and I got some cracking shots as a result. I looked at the Kata cover but felt it did not offer half the protection needed. http://www.camerasunderwater.co.uk/video/capes/ewa.html was where I got mine from.

Looks like something worth having. That said I remember years ago that you could buy a cover bonded on to a NC or Skylight filter. So you screwed on the filter and the cover wrapped itslef over the camera - perfect. Can you still get them? Glyn
