Why is it essential? For short trips and hikes where you’re only taking a camera and a couple of lenses, a multi-purpose camera bag is ideal and the Kata Bumblebee DL-210 is just the job.
Key features: Measuring a respectable 33x24x44cm in size, it’s plenty big enough to store a decent amount of camera kit along with a bunch of other day-to-day items. Unzipping the lower compartment reveals the main camera storage area, which has enough room for a D-SLR with a standard lens attached, two to three additional lenses, and an assortment of other accessories such as flashguns and filters. Above the camera pocket, there are two other compartments used for storing personal items. The rear of these can also be expanded into the lower camera pocket by removing the zippered partition, and once the foam inner is removed this turns the DL-210 into a standard backpack. Along the back of the bag there’s a laptop slot which can house a 15in notebook or provide storage for maps, guidebooks, or anything else that needs to be kept flat. Finally, there’s a zipped pocket on the side for storing smaller items that you may require quick access to, such as a wallet or phone, and a pouch on the opposite side that’s ideal for holding a water bottle or canteen.
Ease of use: The rear of the harness features a cushioned foam back for comfort and ventilation, and there are also two fully adjustable sternum straps that reduce load on the shoulders. A stabilising waist strap can be clipped around the lower body to provide extra support and keep the bag anchored comfortably to the body. All of the pocket zips are smooth to open and come complete with toggles that can be easily locked up tight using a small padlock or combi-lock.
Price: The Bumblebee DL-210 comes in either black or grey, and is priced at a very reasonable £110.
Conclusion: This backpack-style camera bag is a smart choice for day trips, as it’s more comfortable to carry than a shoulder bag, packs in more gear and can also include non-photographic items (like your lunch!). Another advantage to the DL-210 is that it can double-up as a standard backpack, meaning that it’s not just dedicated to your camera equipment – all this makes it an extremely versatile piece of kit!
