Carrying a large, heavy camera backpack on a small expedition can be excessive, so it’s a good idea to have a smaller backpack handy. The 3N1-20 sling-backpack from Kata has been designed to be slung over the shoulder but can also be used as a conventional backpack.
The straps on the backpack are colour coded in red and black, so if you’re a right-handed photographer you should choose the red strap to sling over your right shoulder. Left-handers should sling the black strap over their left shoulder. The hip belt can be pulled together and fastened with the buckles to make it sit straighter against your back. We found this comfortable, but for distance carrying it’s worth using both straps to distribute the weight evenly across both shoulders.
The slimline look of the sling-backpack is a tad deceiving as we managed to fit in a large sized D-SLR with battery grip and standard lens, plus an additional two lenses, thanks to its deep and spacious interior. There was even room to spare in the top compartment for snacks and waterproofs.
And you won’t be let down in a storm, either – the 3N1-20 comes with a cover to protect your kit from the elements and ensures it stays dry as a bone.
Overall a cleverly designed bag from Kata and if you’re looking for a slightly smaller but capable backpack, it’s definitely one to consider.
