Most of the main features of the Giga Vu Pro Evolution are similar to many other portable storage devices. It can store and review JPEG, TIFF and RAW files, along with music and video files should you want some entertainment while you’re away.

As it’s designed for professional users it only has a slot for CompactFlash or Microdrives built into the unit. You can use other cards by using an adapter, but this may not be the most convenient option for owners of cameras that use xD, SD or other memory cards.

The Jobo Giga Vu Pro Evolution is available in 40GB, 80GB and 120GB, and all devices are protected by a rubber coating, rather than the more common hard plastic and metal body of other portable storage devices, which should help it survive outdoor use.

Download performance and image quality are excellent, making it one of the best portable storage options on the market. Download times are 43 seconds for Fast copy only (256MB), 2 minutes 30 seconds for Copy + preview (256MB), and 6 minutes 20 seconds for Copy + preview + verify (256MB).

Most devices only allow you to see the low resolution JPEGs attached to the RAW file for quick viewing, but the Giga Vu Pro Evolution displays the original RAW file, allowing you assess the sharpness and exposure of your images much more accurately.

There are also plenty of options when displaying and viewing images on the 3.7in screen. These include a full range of histograms (including individual RGB channels), a black & white mode, EXIF data display and even a mode to detect dust spots on your images so you know when you need to clean the sensor of your camera.

Unusually, the unit has two USB connections – one is used to connect it to your computer for normal downloading, while the other is known as a USB on-the-go port, which can be used to connect it to other compatible devices to transfer files out in the field. This can be used to download images directly from your digital camera, rather than taking the card out, or even to upload the images from the Jobo onto a second device if you need secondary back-up.
