The Interfit Home Studio EXD200 Kit includes two heads, two spill kills, two light stands, a 90cm translucent umbrella, 60cm softbox, power leads and sync cable all in a large carry case. The softbox on the Interfit Home Studio EXD200 Kit features an internal diffuser, which is a bonus for softer light, although the outer shell material is a little on the thin side. Build quality of the actual heads is better though, featuring a rubberised grey finish that looks good and should protect against scratches and marks.
The lighting stands have three leg sections, although the stands don’t raise any higher than other budget kits, and the top leg section is air cushioned which will protect the head from getting damaged if this section is released too quickly. Setup was quick and easy with no problems erecting the softbox, and the umbrella simply slots through a hole in both the spill kill and head bracket to hold in place. If you’re looking at other accessories though, bear in mind that Interfit has its own EX mount, so check what’s available in that range.
Performance & HandlingThere’s a wide array of buttons on the rear of the head, which may seem onerous to those unfamiliar with studio flash, but it does mean you have lots of control. The power output can be set between 25–200w/s, in 1/10th stop increments using push buttons and an LED display, which isn’t quite as quick as a dial.
The modelling lamp uses a not-particularly-bright 60w bulb, but on the plus side its power can be set independently of the flash, either turning it off completely, or adjusting it in conjunction with the flash output.
To fire the flash you can use the supplied 5m sync cable with 3.5mm jack or the photocell that will detect a burst of flash from 10m, but no radio triggers are included. The photocell can be triggered on either the 1st, 2nd or 3rd flash it detects, overcoming the problem of the head being triggered out of sync by the pre- flash from a pop-up flash. In testing we clocked the Guide Number at GN32 (ISO 100, 1m) – a stop less than stated – and recycling time after a full power recharge was 1.4secs on average.
