Best described as a cross between biking/skiing jackets and a photo vest, the Gitzo Photo Fleece (£229) and Four Season Jacket (£329) have caused quite a stir since their launch at Focus on Imaging 2008 – they’re the last word in practical.

Gitzo is the Rolls Royce of tripods, so you may wonder why the brand has launched an update on the photo vest – an item that has fallen resolutely out of fashion. But, like the rest of its product line-up, the quality of these jackets is excellent. (It should be – they work out about twice the price of a top-of-the-range waterproof or fleece from an outdoor shop.)
On the plus side they’re waterproof, breathable and highly capacious. I managed to fit my full camera kit (including 70-200mm f/2.8 and a spare camera body) into the Four Season Jacket pockets. That’s pretty impressive, although this does make the jacket fairly heavy...
Gitzo has clearly put a lot of thought into these products, with several clever design flourishes such as the shoulder epaulette to hold your bag in place and the Hi-Vis press-pass pockets. Even so, you either love this style of jacket or you hate it. If you shoot sports events or just like to carry all your kit on your person, then a Gitzo jacket may be the way forward. The price definitely places these products on the luxury list for most enthusiasts; professionals may be able to justify them more.
