Tripod design is a constant trade-off between lightweight portability and sturdy shake-proof build. Popular materials such as carbon fibre have held sway for some years now, yet this latest GT2330 tripod from Gitzo looks set to challenge current design ideas and address the old ‘aluminium tripods weigh a ton’ argument.
Rather than streamline the legs – an approach adopted by other tripod manufacturers – Gitzo has reduced the weight of other components, resulting in a tripod that weighs just 1.8kg (carbon fibre tripods can weigh as little as 0.4kg without a head) – a comfy enough weight to lug around for short distances.
It’s a sleek and reassuringly solid tripod, with just enough up its sleeve to appeal to landscapers and macro fanatics alike. Gitzo’s G-lock system, adjustable legs, reversible basalt centre column and hook for hanging extra ballast are all present and correct, and the tactile and ergonomically designed grips are a pleasure to hold. This all means that ground-level and eye-level shooting can be achieved quickly and painlessly, with the three legs clicking through 24º, 60º and 80º angle adjustments.
Other than that, the GT2330 is a frill-free zone – no fancy spirit levels here. Instead, the features that really matter (ie solid legs and reliable leg locks) are as robust as they could possibly be. So no real complaints at all – the Gitzo GT2330 is incredibly well made, will last a lifetime and, at £230, won’t cost you the earth.
