The Gitzo GT1531 tripod has a sleek and slender design, which weighs in at 1.1kg.

The Gitzo GT1531 has a centre column that can be unscrewed and reversed but cannot be split, so the lowest possible working height is 17cm. If even lower heights are required, the Gitzo GS1510KB ground level column kit (£70) needs to be purchased. Unscrewing the twist-type leg locks and assembling the tripod to the maximum height (155cm) takes around 31 seconds. This isn’t the quickest, but offers a rigid base for a weighty bit of kit. The load capacity stands at 8kg so there’s no problem loading a heavy telephoto lens and camera body onto this set of sticks. Applying heavy pressure did not result in leg slippage and it only flexed slightly when very heavy pressure was applied. It’s an exceptionally constructed tripod that’s strong, rigid and extremely light but at £381 it’s quite expensive.
