The Gitzo GT1531 6X carbon fiber tripod has been designed for both compact and D-SLR users and offers a maximum load capacity of 8kg. This model features an ‘Ultra Low’ setting for those lower shooting angles and is backed up with a G-Lock leg locking system for quicker and stronger adjustment. The central column is removable should you need to reduce the weight and all new Mountaineer tripods come with a convenient anti-dust bag for added protection and storage.

First time users of this Gitzo will be instantly be impressed by its lightweight feel. Extending the tripod to its maximum height (155cm minus head) is hassle-free and it’s a simple and smooth operation. Gitzo has opted for screw locks instead of leg clasps that are common on other rival models, but they work efficiently with these smooth sliding legs. The rubber feet that are screwed into the base of the tripod legs can easily go astray so it’s well worth double-checking the tightness of these with your purchase. Moving on up shows off the GT1531’s central column arrangement, which is robust and sturdy with a strong locking collar. We opted for the G1178M quick release centre ball head that includes a spirit level, giving us a combined weight of 1.55kg in all – very impressive! The ball head has a superb build quality just like the tripod and is combined with a secure locking plate system that fills you with confidence.

If you can justify spending over £300 on a tripod, the Gitzo is the photographer’s ideal choice. It has proved itself with a strong performance, fantastic build quality and ultra lightweight feel.
