The Giottos MT 8246B is a carbon-fibre travel tripod. It’s lighter than many tripods, at just 1kg (without a head) and therefore it’s that bit easier to cart about. If you're one of those photographers who takes a tripod on holiday – just in case – you'll know that lightness and ease of packing are both very welcome at the airport.

Travel tripods must also be sturdy and capable of dealing with difficult conditions– uneven ground, gales etc. Which is why we like this model. It’s simple but strong, and quick to operate. The four-section legs can be tightened and loosened easily enough and when it’s in use, it’s rock solid. That’s the most important thing.
To be fair, although this is primarily a travel tripod, it’s certainly well-built and strong enough for everyday use, although it lacks some of the versatility of more expensive models.
And while you’re out buying a tripod, I’d always recommend investing in the best tripod head you can afford too, so precise framing adjustments can be made that much easier.

The build quality of this tripod is superb. The design is clean and well-thought-out and handling is a pleasure. The lightness was an important factor for me. I travel a lot and need to keep my bagage weight to 10-12 kg, so every bit of weight saved counts. Particularly for travel, the rubber twist wheels that extend the telescopic legs are much more likely to absorb rough handling than clip closures. I use it with a Giottos MH 1301 head, which is another awesome piece of engineering: solid and versatile. I did quite a lot of market research before buying and I believe there is no other tripod in its class that gives such value for money. When deployed the tripod is impressively stable and versatile.
