Cold press papers are renowned for their textured surfaces and although Epson Cold Press Natural Paper isn’t overly-textured, it feels thick and well-defined in the hand. Epson’s Cold Press Natural paper is a relatively new fine-art medium on the market and stands out with a huge box that offers excellent all-round protection. Inside you get 25 sheets of Cold Press paper neatly packaged in cellophane, with a sticker indicating the printable side. Weighing in at 340gsm, it’s quite a heavy paper, too.
Downloading the ICC profile from Epson’s website was easy and the .ZIP file came with an excellent PDF instruction guide that described how to install it. Within five minutes we were ready to print both our test images and the first sheet was loaded into the R2880. A close inspection of the prints under the loupe revealed true, accurate colours, with exceptional detail in the dark shadow areas. All the edges remained crisp and defined in both the colour and mono prints and there were no signs of ink bleeding or spidering.
With no faults in terms of quality or performance, Epson’s Cold Press Natural paper sets a benchmark. However, it is quite expensive at £3.04 a sheet, so you won’t want to be making too many mistakes!
