Elinchrom D-Lite 2/4 To Go Kit

Elinchrom’s D-lite 2/4 starter kit unusually includes two flash heads with differing power outputs, 200w/s and 400w/s all for the one price.

The Elinchrom D-Lite 2/4 To Go Kit also includes two light stands, two umbrellas (silver and translucent), a softbox, spill kills and a reflector all packed away in two smart carry cases, including an armoured case for the heads.
Build quality is a bit mixed. On the plus side, the stands feature two leg sections with flip locks, which are quick to set up, and metal spill kills. The heads are less robust though, with a plastic finish, a laminated rubber layer over the buttons and there’s a thin softbox lining. The 5m sync cable connects via a 3.5mm jack, and the umbrellas simply push into a slot in the head, which is quick and convenient. Elinchrom uses its own bayonet mount, which fits all the accessory range if you’re looking for extras.

Performance & Handling
The 200 head features a power range between 12-200w/s, with the 400 head offering 25-400w/s, giving you the added bonus of extra flexibility. The power output is controlled via up and down buttons on the back of the head, which are slightly more time-consuming to use than a power dial, but this is a minor niggle. More importantly, both heads use incremental steps of tenths, giving you plenty of control when adjusting the power.
There’s a 100w modelling lamp, which can be set to adjust proportionally with the flash power, turned off completely, or set to the minimum or maximum brightness. Other controls include a test fire button, and controls to turn both the photocell and audio recycle beeps on or off.
We recorded the Guide Numbers at GN45 (ISO 100, 1m) for the 200w/s head and GN64 (ISO 100, 1m) for the 400w/s head. Recycle times were also good, coming in at 1.5secs and 0.9secs for a full power recharge from the 400w/s and 200w/s heads.
Elinchrom is planning to launch a new D-lite 2/4 it (Intelligent Trigger) system with wireless triggering. The basic 2/4 kit will retail for around £549, so look out for that.
