Hands up who’s ever used their t-shirt or jumper to give a lens a quick wipe over? We’ve all done it, but it just takes a tiny spec of grit or dirt and you can do more damage than good, so it’s important to use a lens cloth to protect and preserve your optics.
E-cloth’s lens cleaning pack is designed to attract and absorb dirt and comes with a 30x30mm cleaning cloth and CleanSafe spray. The 25ml bottle features anti-static protection to help reduce the build-up of dust and dirt and it can be used over 300 times before a replacement (£6) is required. The spray contains no harmful chemicals and can be used on all kinds of optical glass, including coated glass, which is commonly used for the front element of most lenses.
The pack is small enough to fit in most camera bag pockets, but we decided to do away with the plastic case and rolled the cloth around the spray bottle to free up a bit more room. Using the kit was straightforward and after a day’s shooting in dusty conditions it removed all the grime from the front element of our lens in seconds. We used a few more sprays on the LCD screen during the day and it cleaned this superbly, too.
After a day’s use our E-cloth was covered with dirt and grime so we machine washed it at 60 degrees centigrade with a teaspoon of washing power. An alternative cleaning method recommended by E-cloth is to put it in a saucepan and warm it through to 90 degrees centigrade. After hanging it up to dry for a few hours we were ready to take it out again on our next expedition.
The E-cloth is a highly recommended product. For just a tenner it offers great value for money and you’ll struggle to find a much better cleaning product for this price. Forget the old t-shirt – go out and buy one to add to your kit!
