If you don’t already own a pack of lens wipes or a lens cleaning cloth, you should. There’s nothing worse than using an optic covered in dirt and, if you let dust build up over time, you’ll spend hours in Photoshop removing distractions that you could so easily have removed before you even fired the shutter.

Dr Optic is a new cleaning brand in the photography market and its latest products use a special formula to make them compatible with coated lenses and UV filters, as well as a multitude of everyday items. Multi-purpose optical lens wipes can be bought for £1.29 for a pack of 12, or £1.99 for a pack of 24 and they’re suitable for camera lenses, sunglasses, mobile phones and monitors. The main advantage of using wipes is they’re so cheap, you can throw them away afterwards. Each wipe works out at less than 10p each and using one on our 70-200mm removed a layer of dust that had built up gradually over time. The wipes were good for cleaning a computer monitor, too, removing a huge amount of dust that we were unaware was there! The wipes are a handy pocket size so ideal to have in your kit bag when you require a quick clean between shoots.

If you want a more permanent lens cloth, opt for the optical cleaner & microfibre cloth kit for £3.99. This includes an 18ml spray bottle and a cloth that measures 8cm x 15cm. One spray of solution is more than enough for each clean and it did a great job of removing grease from our Lee filters. We also used the solution and cloth to clean a computer keyboard. Dr Optic recommends that you clean the cloth in hot soapy water when it shows signs of dirt.

Overall, we’d choose the optical cleaner and microfibre cloth kit over the optical wipes. At £3.99, the kit will not break the bank and it’s small enough to tuck away in one of your camera bag pockets for occasional use.
