Express V6.1 is a slightly refined and cheaper version of its larger sibling, Capture One Pro V6.1. Aimed at the amateur photographer market, it offers a great platform to hone your skills and expand your knowledge in both RAW conversions and
photo manipulation. The usual adjustment options are featured, including clarity, colour editor, and sharpening. It also includes an automatic spot remover tool that will effectively remove any unsightly dust spots from your image with a single click. There’s a handy Vignetting slider that lets you darken or lighten the edges of your image to either remove unwanted dark edges or to achieve a creative framing effect. Image outputs consist of adding your files to a slideshow, uploading them to your own web gallery, exporting them as a range of different files types, or sending them straight to print with a range of customisable print layouts and watermark options, too.
The large viewing area in the centre of the Capture One Express V6.1interface allows you to easily open and work on multiple images at the same time, making for a more consistent and faster workflow. Using the Library tool tab (that can be neatly minimised) to access your files throughout your computer is a nice touch and makes for a simplified way of navigating through images. The interface itself looks pleasingly tidy and can be further refined by removing tabs or tools that you feel you don’t need, keeping only the essentials
on show.
For a package that contains a fair amount of editing options, Express V6.1 is reasonably good value for money at £95. If you like the look of this programme but feel that the Express option may be too limiting, the Capture One Pro package is also available at £239 and offers more advanced options and settings such as split toning and lens corrections (visit the Phase One website for more details).
Express V6.1 is a solid alternative to the Adobe Photoshop packages, providing a great range of image adjusters and editing tools. If Photoshop just isn’t your bag, Capture One Express is definitely worth a look and the package can be purchased by way of digital download via the Phase One website - there’s also a 30-day free trial available for you to try out.
