The Canon Speedlite 430EX II is Canon’s mid-range accessory flashgun and is compatible with both its range of D-SLRs and some compacts, too. The Canon Speedlite 430EX II is sleek and well-designed with modest dimensions and decent build quality, and the durable feel is topped off with a slide lock to hold it firmly on the hotshoe. Operation via the buttons and screen is simple.
The 430EX II is well specified, featuring E-TTL flash metering together with manual power adjustment, with control of the output ranging from full power to 1/64. There’s a 24-105mm bounce and swivel zoom head, high-speed sync capabilities and nine customisable functions. Performance is solid – we recorded the Guide Number at GN33 – but unless you need to light very large subjects it’s ample. Recycle time was 4.7secs when shooting at full power.
