Canon’s MR-14EX is a traditional style ring flash fitting lenses with a 58mm filter thread and comprising of two units, the flash itself and a controller connected via a coiled cable.
The flash unit is comprised of a pair of tubes, offering independent power control down to an 1/8 output, which gives the user the ability to produce different lighting tricks, and add modelling to the subject. The controller sits atop the camera hotshoe and can also wirelessly control compatble slave units for backround lighting for example.
The shooting modes include E-TTL as well as manual control, along with high speed flash for short shutter speeds, useful if shootin moving insects for instance.
The output quality is good with lenses over 50mm, fall off can occur with shorter macro lenses, and the unit allows plenty of creative control.
Verdict
This is a well made, solid bit of kit that’s bound to keep macro shooters occupied for hours but be sure to save up your pennies, £375 is a rather high price!
