Inspired by Canon’s D-SLR range in style and finish, the M30 portable storage device is straightforward to use by anyone familiar with the EOS system. It accepts both CF and SD memory cards and there’s a one-touch back-up button to download the card without having to go through a menu (though download speeds are not outstanding). The device also uses the same batteries as the Canon mid-range D-SLRs, so you can chop and change when out in the field.
One massive drawback is the fact that although it comes supplied with a standard battery charger, it doesn’t come supplied with a power adapter. The power pack (CA-57) is available separately for around £55 but you shouldn’t have to buy something that’s essential. The last thing you want after using a portable storage device in the field is to have to charge the batteries before you can back-up the images onto your computer.
With the power pack included the price shoots up to more than £400, which is really far too high for a 30GB storage device. For another £50-£60 you could get an 80GB Epson P-5000 or Jobo Giga Vu Pro Evolution, both of which are far more complete packages and thus offer better value for money.
