The Canon 430EX combines good looks with a high specification and is simple to use. An ideal choice as main flashgun for amateurs and a back-up for pros.

The Canon 430EX is a mid-price flashgun, replacing the popular 420EX with a host of new features, including automatic selection of camera white balance, and an automatic adjustment of zoom flash position depending on D-SLR sensor size.

Flash output has been increased and it now reaches an impressive GN of 43 and has 40% faster recycling times than the old model. And it covers a zoom range of 14 to 105mm.

The back of the unit is clearly laid out and the LCD keeps you informed of your settings, while a single button controls tilt and swivel movements. The only concern is that the select, plus and minus buttons are quite small.

It is fully compatible with the Canon distance linked E-TTL II system and is fitted with a wireless slave unit so can be controlled remotely by several flash units, including the bigger 580EX or Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2.

The flashgun is a good choice for canon users, and being fully compatibility with the wireless flash system, the 430EX makes it hard for third party models to prove their worth.

When I first bought this flash unit, I was really pleased with it... and indeed it is an excellent flashgun. It makes a huge difference from using the built in flash... and if you take the flash off camera, it's even better. However, I didn't really understand when I bought it that it was a "slave" and cannot be used as a "master". Now I do understand.. I wish I'd bought the 530EX.

The Canon 430ex is an excellent flashgun for those new to photography as it is easy to use and the manual easy to understand. It is a great flash gun to learn from as the auto mode works very well employing TTL technology. It is also capable of being fully manually controlled for those that require more control of their flash lighting. Another feature is the ability to act as a wireless slave flash controlled by either the canon flash remote system or via its bigger brother the 580EX, so is an ideal choice as a second flash for those wanting to experiment with multiple flash lighting. Highly Recommended.

Its all rather new to me, as I've always used on-camera flash before, but went for this flashgun mainly because it was one of the best value for money. It feels a bit plasticy, and I'm careful when adjusting the angle of the head as Im never too sure how much pressure it will take. Other than that, as a flashgun newby, its fair enough to just fasten to the top of the camera, switch on and shoot away. Its got a much better range than on-camera as you would expect. I'll get more creative with it as the months progress.
