Camerent lens hire

We assess Camerent by renting a pro-spec lens from the company.

Camerent offers a good range of optics, stocking over 200 Canon lenses and over 150 Nikon lenses. Its website is well arranged and in 20 seconds we’d found the lens we wanted to hire. There are three rental terms to choose from – daily, weekend, or weekly hire and the cost of renting the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L II USM for a week came to £93.12 with the price of delivery and collection included.
There was no option of insuring the lens on the website, but following this up, we discovered insurance for any lens costs 10% of the rental fee and covers accidental damage but not loss or theft. Plans are in place to develop the site so insurance and lens availability can be checked.
Processing the order was quick and you can pay online or over the phone. First-time customers are required to pay a £500 holding deposit before the lens is sent out and with the lens booked, we received an email on the delivery date confirming dispatch to our address.
The lens arrived in a safe and secure Peli case with a lens manual, documents and lens hood enclosed. Cleaning wipes were supplied, too, but these weren’t required as the front element was spotless. The only disappointment was that it didn’t come with a UV filter, so the front element was exposed. The lens performed impeccably and we checked our rental documents to find the collection date. The courier collected the lens with no problems, returning it to Camerent’s headquarters.
Camerent impressed us with its well-laid out website and easy to use online booking system. The hire prices Camerent offers were very competitive  – for the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 L II USM, we paid a reasonable £93 for a week-long rental, which included VAT and insurance, as well as delivery to and from our address by courier. It was satisfying to have the lens delivered in a protective Peli case, allowing us to transport it around easily, without fear of damaging it
in transit.
The condition of the lens on arrival was immaculate, and it was good to have a lens manual included for referral. The only downside was that our lens didn’t come fitted with a UV filter, but other than this small point, Camerent performed faultlessly in this test.

Just came across this review and was surprised at the rating and especially the service you received from Camerent. Our experiences in dealing with them have been absolutely abysmal! Last year we arranged to hire some cameras and accessories for film project for one of our established customers. We got a phone call from them to say they were having problems with the order (which had been arranged a week in advance) would update us shortly. After chasing them throughout the day we were finally told at 5:25pm that we wouldn't be getting any equipment and unfortunately they couldn't help us. They also said the deposit (of around £2k) wouldn't be refunded for a couple of days! We resolved the issue by going to Hireacamera who pretty much saved the project and the customer relationship! We didn't get the exact kit we needed but they got us something to do the job delivered before 9:30am the next morning and we duly began filming at the opening of the show. After writing a letter of complaint, I heard back from the director via a phonecall to apologise and promised the next shoot we do, to try them again and he would pick up the cost. He also promised to find out what went wrong and get back to me. As we expected, we didnt hear back from him again! Stupidly we phoned them back to take him up on his offer and as we expected, they didn't get back to us. As a result, nearly all our hires are now through hireacamera who have been excellent every time we have used them. Equipment has always been delivered on time as and when required, it has always worked fine and the staff are always helpful. We have also used Flash Centre and Calumet, both in London in an emergency when we needed a couple of camera lenses and had no problems with either of them. As I run a small upcoming production/vfx/film/3D company, I can't afford for the level of service camerent provide and will always use other providers. These are just my personal opinions and there may be customers who have received good service from them but in my mind would never use them again.

RE: Camerent lens hire

DO NOT USE CAMERENT

I wish I had read the reviews online before I used Camerent’s services. The worst people I have ever dealt with in my life.

I hired a camcorder from them for a weekend as my original one was sent to Canon for repair. However my original camcorder was returned on the same week I had booked the rental with Camerent. As result I wanted to cancel the camcorder hire with them but was told that the cancellation would cost the full amount of the hire. Respectfully I understood and decided to go along with it and used the hired camcorder to transfer recorded footage onto my PC just so that I could make some use of the rent. They froze an amount of £1000 on my account as a deposit.

On return of the camcorder the £1000 deposit was unfrozen however a few days later I was on Holiday and was unable to use my debit card. I then received an email stating that there is a scratch on the camcorder lens and the deposit of a £1000 was taken from my account again. At this point I was shocked and thought there must be some sort of mistake as I did not touch the lens. I tried explaining the situation to them through numerous emails, telephone calls and letters.

I have several years of experience in using camcorders and cameras. Why would I scratch the lens?

Months went by and I received no response from them. The CSAs were extremely rude and refused to help me whatsoever. I requested for them to investigate the situation and provide proof and they always promised to call me back but they never did. They would refuse to put me through a manager and cut me off every time I called. They would constantly shout at me and laugh at my situation like it was some sort of joke. I also emailed the Sales director Alan Moran several times but received no reply.

It came to a point where I had taken enough so I spoke to Trading standards and took Camerent to court for the deposit amount. They tried to counter claim by lying that they had already provided me with proof and contacted me several times. At this point I did not even care about the money and just wanted to prove them wrong.

Finally, I won the case and Camerent had to pay me back the full amount.

I have never been so disgusted with a company like this before, the way they treated me was appalling and made me brake down several times.

I have never written a review on anything before but I feel that everyone should know how this company really is. In total it took over 1 year and 3 months to get my money back. Camerent is not worth the hassle and should be AVOIDED!
