B+W has five Neutral Density filters in its range, numbered 101, 102, 103, 106 and 110. The last two digits in these numbers represent the amount of light the B+W 110ND 3.0 – 10BL 1000x cuts out in stops, so for our test it’s the 110ND we’re scrutinising, cutting out 10 stops of light.
Featuring a 1000x attenuation factor and a 3.0 filter optical density, this B+W filter is manufactured from uncoated glass. It’s a circular filter with a thread at the rear so you can screw it onto your lens. Our test filter was 77mm in size – a common size for wide-angle lenses – but if you need a different one, it’s available in 52, 55, 58, 62, 67, 72 and 77mm threads, and on special order in 35.5, 39, 40.5, 43, 46 and 49mm at no extra cost – an impressive range. The filter is supplied in a plastic case for safe storage and there are two foam inserts to prevent damage or scratches to the surface. Screwing onto our test lens was quick and easy, taking less than 10secs. This 77mm B+W 110ND filter costs £80 and at this price, you won’t want to buy more than one, though prices are lower for smaller thread sizes.
