B&W 110 ND Filter

B+W 110 ND Filter

The B+W 110 ND cuts out an amazing 10 stops of light – far more than usual – meaning it can turn a 1/60sec shutter speed into 16secs!

A Neutral Density (ND) filter like this B&W 110 ND is often needed if you want to experiment with long exposures, reducing the amount of light that passes through the lens to the sensor and allowing you to use slower shutter speeds in your shots. This slowing down of the shutter lets you capture the motion of flowing water or clouds as a blur as it moves through your frame and makes for some very creative pics.
Considering the B+W 110 ND costs up to £70 (77mm filter thread - price depends on size), stacking three or four cheaper ND filters together can seem like a smarter solution, but the thickness of stacked filters often creates vignetting at wide angles, and all the additional surfaces in the light path can cause lens flare. So, just one filter makes a lot of sense.
Using the B+W 110 N is quite an art – you have to compose and focus shots before adding the filter, as once it’s on you can barely see anything through the viewfinder. But if you fancy experimenting with really long exposures it’s a fabulous tool, allowing you to use slow shutter speeds even in full daylight conditions. Very specific, but good fun!

Before purchasing anything new I often ask myself what that particular piece of kit will bring me that I don't already have. It is after all very easy to spend a lot of money in photography and not gain an awful lot, but the B&W ND110 truly adds another dimension to your photography in my view. I put this item in the same creativity category as purchases like a Fisheye or Tilt/Shift lens for the power to adjust an image or bring a look which is near impossible to get from Photoshop without a huge amount of manipulation. The advantage here is that even if you have to buy the more expensive 77mm filter, it's still a whole lot cheaper than investing in a new lens which might not bring another dimension to your photography. Yes, it's not the easiest piece of kit to work with, you have to set the shot up first before screwing it on, and yes you need to know how long an under/over or spot on exposure takes (I would recommend downloading an exposure table from the net and carrying it with you). It takes some practice to use effectively, but once you are comfortable with it you will want to shoot more and more with it. All in all, a great purchase that will both evolve you as a photographer and add a new dimension to your photography that I guarantee will get you excited...
