The LaCie Rugged 160GB portable hard drive is a well-designed model that stands out from the crowd with its bright orange rubber protection. Along with the160GB, there are 250GB, 320GB and 500GB models. This is a great piece of kit if you’re looking to safely transport your RAW files or other documents around with you.

World-renowned designer, Neil Poulton, is at the centre of this superb creation that offers the user a fantastic portable storage solution. It comes with a high-speed USB 2.0 interface connection that’s bus powered and plug-and-play compatibility for both PC and Mac users. The hard drive holds a unique scratch-protected aluminum shell with a shock-resistant rubber bumper to reduce hard knocks on the move and all-round extra protection from the elements.
The 160GB model may seem expensive at £90 – and you may be able to find cheaper alternatives on the market – but you will be struggling to beat the superb build quality of the LaCie Rugged. The orange protective bumper provides a very satisfying durable feel and is the perfect size for your pocket. The USB 2.0 cable that accompanies the hard drive could be slightly longer as it’s currently only 2ft long, but the user could easily replace this if required.
Copying speeds for the 160GB model are reasonable, taking 1min 12 sec to copy 1GB of data from the computer’s C drive via USB 2.0. Opening a 250MB file into Photoshop from the external drive took just 5 secs – very impressive!
If you’re in need of a portable device with a higher storage capacity, that can withstand the day-to-day knocks of life, this LaCie Rugged hard drive is well worth a look.
