The Tokina 12-24mm F/4 AT-X AF PRO DX II offers photographers using a Canon or Nikon mount a robust build and good feature set at a competitive price. The 12-24mm f/4 AT-X AF PRO DX II offers photographers using a Canon or Nikon mount a robust build and good feature set at a competitive price. Updated from an earlier version, the new model now includes an AF motor and a new multi-coating on the lens elements to reduce flare. Like the 10-17mm (above) the mottled black finish is refined, but this larger lens utilises bigger zoom and focus rings. Compatible with APS-C sensors only it provides an equivalent 18-36mm focal range on Nikon, or 19x38mm on Canon, and the maximum aperture of f/4 is fixed through the range. AF performance is quick and doesn’t hunt, although on the Canon model tested there was some whirring. The focus ring is smooth and nicely weighted, and there’s a clutch mechanism for switching between AF & MF mode. The zoom ring is not quite as nice, however, offering a bit of resistance at each end of the range.
