Tokina’s 100mm f/2.8 AT-X is a third-party offering and is available in Canon and Nikon mounts, being suitable for use with APS-C or full-frame D-SLRs. Featuring an internal construction of 9 elements in 8 groups, this lens has a minimum focusing distance of 30cm and has a 9-blade aperture design just like its Nikon, Sony and Tamron rivals.

It doesn’t have an in-built motor which means it will not autofocus with Nikon D-SLRs that don’t have their own in-built AF motor, such as the D40, D60, D3000, D3100, D5000 or D5100.
With our Nikon-fit test lens attached to the D7000, it had a strong, solid
feel in the hand, weighing 540g. It employs a push/pull focusing system to switch from AF to MF. Unlike Tamron’s design there’s no blue ring to visually indicate you’ve set MF, but the ring does offer a smooth refined movement over three quarters of a turn. A large rounded switch on the side of the barrel gives you the option of limiting the minimum focus distance to 39cm (1:3) when not shooting macro subjects and the lens extends by 57mm when shooting life-size close-ups at 1:1. A metal lens mount is featured, but during tests it hunted for focus before finally locking on, and was one of the more noisy systems.
